doll cat costume

Another thing I made for Halloween last year was a costume for my daughter's doll, Pretty Baby (the doll is actually an American Girl Bitty Baby but she has always called her Pretty Baby instead so we just go with it). A few weeks before Halloween, my daughter announced that Pretty Baby was going to be a black cat. She also announced that I was going to dress up as a knight... but that didn't happen!

Anyway, I thought that it would be cute to make an outfit for Pretty Baby, so I went looking for a pattern. If I had designed something myself I probably would have just made ears or a mask and been done with it, but luckily I found the Catwoman Suit pattern by Cole's Creations and it worked just perfectly. I cut up one of my old black t-shirts and the outfit came together very quickly. The pattern was simple and well-written, with tips on how to make a better, more durable doll outfit for those of us who haven't before. I can see how making doll clothes could become addicting... they use such little fabric, are easy to sew and don't require nearly as much perfection or attention to detail as an actual article of clothing does, so there's lots more wiggle room for errors. Plus tiny things are generally just plain cute.

I sewed the pattern as written (minus the catwoman mask), except that I added a tail. Unfortunately, Pretty Baby was sleeping in her crib in my daughter's room so I didn't get to try the cat suit on for fit before adding said tail... and I sewed it on way too low. Like in the crotch area. It looked great until I put it on the doll the next morning. Oops. But my daughter loved it and that is all that matters!

astronaut costume

The first item I want to share with you is the astronaut costume I made for my daughter to wear for Halloween. She decided she wanted to be an astronaut last year in March, I think, and she talked about her costume every day, so it was a long wait until the end of October for her!

I put off designing the costume until October... I know I could have started sooner but I honestly thought she would probably change her mind before Halloween, but she never did! I decided I didn't want to make a costume that was too complicated or that could be uncomfortable or hard to wear - this was a 2-year-old I was dealing with after all... I wanted her to wear it! I ended up loosely basing my costume off of this photo I found on Pinterest (source unknown). I loved how comfy it looked, while still obviously being an astronaut.

For the top I made a Bimaa sweater with a hood. For the pants I made Go To Leggings. Both are such easy, quick patterns. I decorated the costume with black bias tape to imitate zippers and sewed on NASA and space shuttle patches I purchased off Etsy. I finished it off with black boots and an American flag... and voilĂ !

So simple yet so effective!

And the best part was that my daughter LOVED it! She still talks about it all the time now, over five months later!

I'm Baaack!

Long time no see!

I've been busy... specifically with this little one born in February!

Yep, she celebrated her 2-month birthday already this week! We are so in love with our newest addition. She is just the sweetest thing and I am trying to snuggle her and love on her so much. As you may imagine, this has led to not much sewing or crafty time for me (and zero blog time!), but I've been missing the creative process so I'm going to start making a concentrated effort to get back to it. I have several (cute!!) projects cut out and ready to sew and I'm itching to get going! (though that may require bringing my sewing machine down to the dining room table - sorry husband!)

On my blog, I'm going to start with a big no-no and try to catch up on all the stuff I've made since I went MIA while pregnant... starting with Halloween. If you hate that sort of thing, please look away... but I really love having [almost] everything I have sewn documented on this blog, so I'm going to soldier along and get it all up here.

See you soon... baby just woke up! :)
